Trying to print a PDF and Adobe Reader fails with the document could not be printed, or nothing prints after it. Other documents sometimes print fine.

What causes this and how do I get the document printed?

This is a common Adobe Reader printing failure with a reliable workaround that also reveals the cause, so the quick fix first then the why:

The reliable workaround, Print as Image: in Adobe Reader's print dialog, Advanced, check Print as Image and print again. This bypasses the usual culprit by rasterizing the page and sending it as a simple image rather than complex PDF drawing commands, and it works when the normal print fails because the failure is usually the printer or driver choking on something complex in the PDF. Print as Image is the single most effective fix for this error, worth trying first.

Why it fails normally: the document could not be printed often comes from a PDF with complex content, corrupt elements or fonts the printer driver cannot process or from the printer driver itself struggling, so the normal print path breaks on the complexity while Print as Image sidesteps it by flattening everything to a picture. The tradeoff is slightly lower quality and larger spooled data, acceptable for getting the document out.

The other causes to check if Print as Image does not resolve it: an outdated printer driver, updated from the manufacturer, a corrupt PDF, tested by opening in another PDF reader or a browser and printing from there and Adobe Reader itself needing an update or a repair, since a specific Reader version bug can cause this. Printing from a different application or reader isolates whether the fault is the PDF, Reader or the printer.

The isolation that finds the cause: if Print as Image works, the cause was complexity or driver handling, resolved. If other documents print fine from Reader but this one fails even as image, the PDF itself is likely corrupt, addressed by re creating or repairing it, opening and re saving it from another tool. If nothing prints from Reader but does from other applications, Reader needs repair or update. The Print as Image workaround both fixes most cases and, by whether it works, tells you where the real fault lies.

Print as Image worked immediately, the PDF had some complex graphics the printer was choking on. Good to know it also tells me the cause was complexity rather than a corrupt file. Printed at slightly lower quality but the document came out, which was all I needed. First thing I will try next time.
