Remove a PST password in Outlook when you know it

I set a password on my archive PST years ago and typing it at every Outlook start has finally exhausted me. I know the password, I just want it gone.

Where is the removal switch? Everything I find online assumes a forgotten password.

The known password case is refreshingly built in, no tools required. Removal is the change password dialog with the new fields left empty:

File, Account Settings, Account Settings, and open the Data Files tab.

Select the password protected PST and click Settings.

Click Change Password in the dialog. Enter the current password in the old password field, then leave both New password and Verify password completely empty.

OK out of everything. From the next Outlook start the file opens without any prompt, the password is simply gone.

Two footnotes while you are in there. Untick Save this password in your password list if the checkbox shows during any prompt beforehand, cached entries occasionally linger and confuse the picture after removal. And since you clearly used the password as speed bump security: it never encrypted anything, the protection was always cosmetic, so its removal costs you nothing real, the forgotten password thread linked alongside explains that mechanism for the curious. Anything genuinely sensitive deserves disk level encryption instead.

Empty new fields, done, no prompt this morning. Years of typing that thing at every start and the removal took thirty seconds.
