EML File Extension


Introduction:

Most of the E-mail programs and services allow to download and save E-mail messages in a format called “.eml”. An EML file extension is used by most of the e-mail clients, such as Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird etc. It is also called archived email, because it preserves the HTML formatting and headers of an email. EML files contains the complete package of the email message including the text body, formatting and attachments.

  • EJF: It is acronym for Envelope Journalling format. EJF contains the recipient and sender information i.e. obtained from SMTP headers. The original message is attached to this envelope message.
  • RCF 822: Standard for ARPA Internet text messages format. It defines Internet E-mail address. Header fields and an optional message body.

EML file are simple text file so it is able to Open in Notepad or a web Browser just by changing the file extension from eml to HTML and TXT.

Default File Size of EML Attachment:

Default limit of EML Attachment is 20 MB (20480kb). But mostly it depends on the E-mail client.

Extract EML File:
  1. EML files show in email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, etc.
  2. By changing the (*.eml) extension to (*.mht) it can be extracted in browsers like Internet Explorer.
  3. By using EML Extractor Tool.
  4. To extract it as a plain text open it using Notepad.

(Note: You can view the file as a plain text file. But there are lot of inrequired characters and the image won't be displayed.)
